ECDC Volunteers are students at the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College, or Holy Cross College who have an interest in children and their education. They typically volunteer for 2 hours once a week in one of the ECDC activity rooms, helping with art projects, playing outside, and reading stories. College students are able to volunteer at either ECDC site and are required to read the Volunteer Handbook and to participate in volunteer orientation/training. Volunteering at ECDC is a great way to get experience working with and learning about young children as well as it is a wonderful addition to any resume, especially for students pursuing degrees in the fields of education, psychology, communicative disorders, sociology, social work, or nursing.
In addition, students that have volunteered with ECDC are given priority in the hiring process for both school year and summer college student positions. Please see the college student employment page for more information.
We appreciate your interest in volunteering at the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC). We know that college students have limited free time and we truly are grateful that they consider spending time with us each week helping young children learn and grow.
“My experience at ECDC has been extremely enjoyable and has helped me recognize my vocation of working with children. Volunteering at ECDC has in many ways been one of the highlights of my SMC career and was definitely something I looked forward to every semester. It was great getting to know the children and participating in all the fun activities! However, my absolute favorite aspect of being involved with ECDC was helping jump start the children’s love of learning.”
