Volunteers and Practicum/Course Related College Students Application & Orientation Process

Welcome to ECDC! We are pleased you will be spending time at ECDC in the role of a Volunteer or Practicum Student. Your participation in the ECDC classrooms will be very valuable to the children and teachers and, we hope, to you as well.

Volunteers (new and/or returning) or Practicum/Course Related Students are required by licensing to complete the following information annually. Please complete and return to the ECDC office on your first day of involvement.

Step 1 – Application (All Volunteers, Practicum/Course Related Students, Student Researchers)

A. Complete the Application and Emergency Information Form

Step 2 – Orientation (All Volunteers, Practicum/Course Related Students, Student Researchers)

A. Read the ECDC Orientation for College Students

B. Read the ECDC Handbook for College Students

C. Read the Universal Precautions Training

Step 3 – Submit to the ECDC office (if involved at ECDC 2 hours or less per week)

A. Sign and submit the ECDC Volunteer/Practicum Student Orientation Form

Step 4 – Complete (only if involved at ECDC for more than 2 hours per week)

A. Read the Required Training Handouts, print, sign and submit documentation that you have completed these orientation/training requirements (pages 17-20 are the signature pages and the only pages you submit). Read the following topics carefully:

  • Child Abuse and Neglect
  • ECDC’s Confidentiality Policy
  • Fire Safety/Fire Hazard
  • Nutrition and Sanitation
  • Inclusion
  • Statement of Commitment
  • Effective Communication Pledge
  • Universal Precautions

B. Online training modules required by the state:

  • Child Abuse and Neglect 
  • Module 1
  • Module 2
  • Module 3

This training can be accessed on the Indiana-Licensing and Education Access Depot (I-LEAD) website. After you create an account, please go to the tab on the left side of the page that says mandatory. The first 4 trainings listed are the ones you need to complete (This is the order they are listed under the tab: Child Abuse and Neglect, Module 1, Module 3, and Module 2). Please print out the certificates as you complete the trainings. Note – we recommend you do not use Internet Explorer Browser to complete modules.

C. FBI Fingerprinting – Important: Carefully follow the instructions to schedule. If the fingerprinting is not completed based upon these instructions, it will need to be redone. Fingerprinting is done at the Goodwill Industries Community Career Center at 3420 Grape Road, Mishawaka. (volunteer/practicum student pays for fingerprinting)

D. 5 Panel Drug Screen, Adult Physical and TB test – Drug screens, physical and TB tests are paid for by the student. Appointments are required for physicals taking place at Concentra Occupational Health, but not needed for drug screens or TB tests. You can request the TB test and drug screen when receiving your physical. TB tests are only given on MTW and F due to the need to return to the clinic to have the results read after 2 or 3 days. Important – Please take the Physical and Substance Abuse Screening Test Consent forms with you to your appointment(s).

  1. SMC students – Drug screens must be completed at Concentra Occupational Health. Physical and TB test requirements should be completed at Women’s Health on the SMC Campus.
  2. ND students – All requirements should be completed at Concentra Occupational Health.
  3. IUSB students – All requirements can be accomplished at Health services on the IUSB campus.
  4. All other students – should complete the requirements at Concentra Occupational Health.
